Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California is a beautiful place to hike, especially during the colder months, between late October to May. There are treks for all levels. Many of the mines are still accessible on foot. Here are 8 short hikes in Joshua Tree that will satisfy any walker. Particularly if you are short on time, or want a quick getaway.
barker dam
1.3-mile loop trail – easy hike
Composed of a soft sandy wash, some rock steps. Once you reach the dam itself, you walk across smooth boulders.
CHOLLA CACTUS GARDENS
0.25-easy loop hike.
This is the easiest of the 8 short hikes in Joshua Tree. The trail consists of hard surfaces and some boardwalk. Beware of the teddybear cactus. Its spikes are dangerous.
hidden valley
1-mile loop trail
Across from Hidden Valley Campground. A mix of sandy trail, stone steps and hard surfaces. See where the cattle rustlers and bandits hid out.
Desert queen ranch aka keys ranch
Only accessible with a guided tour
A 90-minute tour of this fascinating 1915 homestead. You will learn about Bill Keys, his wife, Frances Mae Lawton and their life in this harsh environment.
Mastodon Mine
3-mile loop from Cottonwood Springs
The Mastodon Mine operated from the 1930s until 1971. This hike is one of the more challenging of the eight listed here. You have a sandy wash and a fair amount of stone steps.
RYAN RANCH & LOST HORSE WELL
0.5-mile easy trail
A very easy sandy path. Ryan Ranch is accessible from the road or the campsite.
SILVER BELL MINE
2-mile round trip
Silver Bell Mine can be viewed from the road mile marker 8. There is no actual marked trail and the terrain is rocky and uphill. Located behind the exhibit sign in the pull-out.
WONDERLAND RANCH & WALL STREET MILL
3-mile out and back hike
As you walk along the sandy wash, you will pass the ruins of Wonderland Ranch on the left. To the right is the windmill. Continue until you reach Wall Street Mill. The best-preserved stamp mill in Joshua Tree.
